Living in Lower Saxony
The open state
Since the end of the Second World War many people had to leave their homes, for different reasons, and found a new home in Lower Saxony. The flow of migration is lasting till this day. As a result, the population of Lower Saxony can’t be described as the one typical population of Lower Saxony, because of the cultural and traditional differences of the inhabitants. The second largest state offers space for many people. The North Sea attracts numerous tourists with seven East Frisian Islands and the largest national park in Germany – the Wadden Sea. Vacationers not only spend their free time at the coast, they also like to relay at Lueneburg Heath, in the beautiful Harz Mountains or in the Weser Uplands. Lower Saxony is famous for redbrick houses, the East Frisian tea culture, the interesting Worpswede artists’ colony and the popular children’s stories by Wilhelm Busch.
The housing market of Lower Saxony is mixed. Rental prices in urban areas are increasing and offers decline. But apartment seekers in rural areas are finding easily an affordable apartment.
The state capital Hanover
Whether ‘city of science’, ‘town of short distances’ or ‘green city’ – Hanover has no official, advertising slogan to present itself in the urban audit. But the reserved city has plenty to offer. Many visitors visit the trade fair town annually. Because popular firms, like Continental, have their headquarters in Hanover, the city has numerous workplaces to offer. City travelers come to Hanover to visit the impressive Herrenhausen Gardens, the quaint historic city, the fascinating ‘Skulpturenmeile’ or the imposing new townhall building.
Every inhabitant can find an appropriate home in one of the 13 neighborhoods. Many young people live in the cool and artistically minded district List. Kleefeld is situated central and therefore it is very popular. Families with children move to Kirchrode, because the location is relaxed and quiet. All Hanoverians like to stroll around in the city forest ‘Eilenriede’ or relax at the lake ‘Maschsee’.
Other popular cities in Lower Saxony
Braunschweig
The city of the lion. This title refers to Henry the Lion who made Braunschweig to a royal metropolis in the 9th century. Today Braunschweig is a center of science and research. Next to historical sights, visitors can visit the remarkable ‘Happy Rizzi House’. The artist James Rizzi created this building that is covered from the outside completely with colorful and cheerful pop art paintings. Students who move to Braunschweig prefer living in ‘Östliches Ringgebiet’, because the district is located near the university.
Oldenburg
The bicycle city gets second place in European comparison in the category ‘amount of ways in the everyday life that can be done by bicycle’. In the inner city of Oldenburg 43% of all ways are done by bicycle, this was confirmed by a ranking of the magazine WirtschaftsWoche. People are able to walk to visit the port of the city, the state theatre or the palace garden. From the 86 meters high tower of the St. Lamberti church, inhabitants have the best view over the city.
Wolfsburg
The Volkswagen-City is international known for automotive manufacturing. In the year 1938 the city was founded for the sole purpose of being the headquarters of the Volkswagen factory. The former name of the city was ‘Stadt des KdF-Wagens bei Fallersleben’. Wolfsburg is one of the few modern city foundations in Germany. A great attraction for tourists is the aventure park ‘Autostadt’. The most popular food in Wolfsburg is the so called ‘VW-Currywurst’. This sausage is made by the butchery of the Volkswagen factory since 1973. There is also a special spiced ketchup from a secret VW recipe. Today the ‘VW-Currywurst’ can be bought in supermarkets. It is easy to find, because there is the note ‘Volkswagen Original’ on the package.
